Hydrangeas in Bloom

Get Involved, Lifestyles Magazine, June 2008

On June 7, Douglasville will host the first annual Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival, sponsored by the American Hydrangea Society. Although green thumbs from all over the country will be attending this memorable event, you don’t have to be a die-hard lover of hydrangea to enjoy the many activities and events planned to celebrate these luxuriant blooms.  “This will become a signature event for Douglasville,” says garden designer and festival organizer Susanne Hudson. “Co-organizer Jeri Farmer and I are excited to present this festival dedicated to the beautification of our community and the preservation of this heirloom plant.”

Most of the festival’s events, to be held from 12 pm to 6 pm in historic downtown Douglasville, are free and open to the public. There will be a Hydrangea Hat Parade, a flower show, and music and entertainment. The Festival Market will feature an art show, a plant sale (including, but not limited to, many varieties of hydrangeas), an antique sale, a home and garden expo, book signings, and food served by downtown restaurants and vendors in an outside dining atmosphere.

Hydrangeas are, of course, best appreciated with some caviar and champagne on the side. To that end, Douglasville’s sumptuous events facility, Le Jardin Blanc, will be the setting for the Hydrangea Ball (June 6, 8:00 p.m.). Guests of this formal gala will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, festive drinks and dancing in an elegant setting. Other ticketed events include Day Garden Tours (June 7, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), which take visitors through some of Douglas County’s most beautiful gardens, including Grandiflora Estate; and the Moonlight and Magnolias event (June 7, 5:30 p.m.), an evening dinner and garden tour.
